What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization, AEO, structures your site so ChatGPT and AI Overviews can quote it directly, not just rank it on Google.

Optimizing content so AI answer engines can find, trust, and quote it directly.

What is an answer engine?

An answer engine is a search tool that responds with one synthesized answer instead of a ranked list of ten blue links. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode qualify, as do ChatGPT with search turned on and Perplexity, all of which read multiple sources and generate a direct response rather than making a person click through to find it themselves. Google describes AI Overviews as helping "people get to the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly" while still providing "a jumping off point to explore links to learn more" (Google, 2026), and both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, to develop a response" (Google, 2026). Perplexity is built the same way by design: PerplexityBot exists specifically to "surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" (Perplexity, 2026). This is the defining shift AEO responds to: being one of ten ranked links is no longer the only goal, being the one thing an engine chooses to read aloud, effectively, is a separate and increasingly important goal.

Why it matters to a local business

A family-owned HVAC company can rank third on Google for "furnace repair" in its city and still never get named when a customer asks ChatGPT who to call for the same job, because the two systems reward different things. A Google ranking rewards relevance and authority signals across an entire page. An answer engine rewards whichever source most clearly and directly answers the specific question asked, and can skip a well-ranked page entirely if a competitor states the same facts more plainly. AEO is the work of closing that specific, separate gap.

The same gap shows up in voice search and smart speaker results, which have always worked as answer engines rather than ranked lists: a device reads out one result, not ten. AI chat interfaces simply extended that single-answer behavior into text, and into far more everyday questions than voice search ever covered, which is why AEO has become a bigger priority now than when it was mostly a voice-assistant concern.

How it works

Three mechanical requirements sit underneath AEO, and all three are things you already partly control. First, the engine has to be able to reach your site at all: OpenAI is explicit that "sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI, 2026), so a blocked crawler ends the conversation before it starts. Second, once a crawler can read your page, it needs facts it can parse without guessing, which is what structured data and plain, declarative writing provide. Third, the engine has to trust the source enough to use it; OpenAI itself warns that its own citations "can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect" and recommends users "use an authoritative source when accuracy matters" (OpenAI, 2026), which implies engines are already weighing source reliability, not just topical relevance. Google states plainly that "you don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" to appear in its AI features (Google, 2026), which is worth taking at face value: AEO is mostly about making already-true facts easy to find and quote, not a secret technical workaround.

What to do about it

  • Confirm AI crawlers can actually reach your site with the free AI Crawler Checker; a blocked bot makes everything else pointless.
  • Add accurate LocalBusiness schema so an engine can read your core facts directly instead of inferring them from prose.
  • Write the specific question a customer would ask as a heading, then answer it in the first sentence that follows, in plain declarative language.
  • Keep hours, pricing, service area, and other facts stated identically everywhere they appear, since contradictions undercut the trust an engine needs to cite you.
  • Check whether it is actually working by sampling real prompts across engines rather than assuming; see AI visibility for how.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as generative engine optimization (GEO)?
The terms overlap heavily and are often used interchangeably. AEO is generally the broader term for optimizing toward any direct-answer feature, while GEO usually refers specifically to optimizing for generative AI systems like ChatGPT. See our [AEO vs GEO vs SEO](/glossary/aeo-vs-geo-vs-seo) comparison for the full breakdown.
Does AEO replace traditional SEO?
No. AEO adds requirements on top of SEO rather than replacing it. A page generally still needs to be crawlable and relevant the way SEO already requires, with AEO adding the further requirement of being structured and quotable enough for an engine to lift a direct answer from it.
Do I need special files or markup to do AEO?
No. Google states directly that no new machine-readable files or special schema are required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. AEO is mostly about making facts that are already true easy to find, crawl, and quote, not a secret technical trick.
How do I know if AEO is actually working for my business?
Track whether AI engines name your business when asked realistic customer questions, sampled repeatedly across engines, which is what [AI visibility](/glossary/ai-visibility) measures. Traffic or Google rankings alone will not tell you whether you are being named inside generated answers.
Does AEO work the same way across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI features?
The goal is the same, being selected as the direct answer, but the mechanics differ by engine. Perplexity is built around citing sources by design, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode can fan out into multiple underlying searches, and ChatGPT's search feature depends on separate crawlers for training versus live citation, so a fix that helps one does not automatically help all three equally.
