How to Show Up in AI Search

What it takes to be named inside a generated answer on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, engine by engine.

Updated September 21, 2026

Showing up in AI search means being named or linked inside a generated answer on ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude. Every one of them needs the same three things from you: permission to fetch your pages, facts written as retrievable text, and outside sources that agree with you.

Five surfaces produce nearly all of it, and they behave differently enough to matter. Google writes AI Overviews above conventional results and runs AI Mode as a separate conversational tab. ChatGPT runs a live search when a question needs current information. Perplexity is search first and cites by default. Gemini answers from Google's grounding. Claude searches too, and Anthropic documents a dedicated Claude-SearchBot that "navigates the web to improve search result quality for users" (Anthropic, 2026).

The common thread is that none of them hands the customer a list of ten links to evaluate. They hand over a short answer naming a few options. Being one of those few is the whole objective.

The one requirement every engine shares

Each publishes an access rule, and each rule is a separate switch. OpenAI says opted out sites "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links" (OpenAI, 2026). Perplexity says webmasters should permit PerplexityBot "to ensure site visibility in search results" (Perplexity, 2026). Anthropic documents three agents with different jobs and publishes its crawler addresses at claude.com/crawling/bots.json. Google routes through ordinary indexing: "To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google, 2026).

Four switches, four separate ways to be invisible. Most sites that fail here do so accidentally, through a single broad rule. Every AI crawler and its rule sets out the wording required per agent.

What each engine needs from you

  • ChatGPT: allow OAI-SearchBot, then give it quotable sentences. Mechanics are in what to change for ChatGPT.
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: stay indexed, keep snippets enabled, and check the generative AI setting in Search Console. Detail is in Google's published instructions.
  • Perplexity: allow PerplexityBot. Perplexity cites heavily, so a page that states a fact cleanly tends to be linked rather than paraphrased away.
  • Gemini: eligibility follows Google's grounding, so the Google work covers it.
  • Claude: allow Claude-SearchBot if you want to appear in Claude's searched answers, separately from the training decision about ClaudeBot.

Google is the one engine that publishes instructions, and they are deliberately unexciting. Its optimization guide asks for three things, valuable non commodity content, sound technical structure, and accurate local records, then rules out the shortcuts directly: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search (including its generative AI capabilities), as Google Search itself doesn't use them" (Google, 2026). It also states that "Structured data isn't required for generative AI search, and there's no special schema.org markup you need to add" (Google, 2026). Markup still helps you by removing ambiguity, but it is not a key to a locked door.

Getting a local business named in AI answers

For a business with an address and opening hours, five concrete items do most of the work.

  • One page per location, each with its own complete address, phone number and hours as text.
  • A services list naming what you actually do, in the words customers use, not internal product names.
  • Up to date reviews wherever your trade is normally reviewed, because agreement between records is what turns a claim into a fact.
  • A business profile that matches your website character for character, since Google notes that generative responses "can include product listings, product information, and information about local businesses" (Google, 2026).
  • Answers to the specific questions you get asked on the phone, published as headed sections.

How can my brand appear in AI search across many locations

Multi location brands fail differently from single shops. The usual cause is a template that repeats one city's content forty times with the place name swapped, which leaves an engine with forty near identical pages and no distinguishing fact for any of them. Give every location something only that location can say: its team, its parking, its hours exceptions, its neighborhood coverage. Then keep the brand level facts identical everywhere, so the entity stays one entity while the local detail stays genuinely local.

Being named and being linked are not the same win

Worth separating, because they need different work. A mention puts your business name inside the prose, which is what a customer reads and remembers. A citation attaches your URL to the answer, and that is what sends a visit. You can get either without the other. A directory page describing you can earn the citation while you get the mention, and an engine can name you from a profile without ever linking your site.

Aim for both, but know which you are short of. If you are named without being linked, your own pages are not the source anyone is reading, and the fix is publishing the facts yourself instead of relying on a third party record. If you are linked without being named, your page was useful but did not clearly identify who provides the service, which usually means the business name and city are missing from the passage that got quoted.

Why two people asking the same thing get different businesses

Generated answers are not deterministic lookups. The retrieved set moves between runs, the wording moves with it, and the businesses picked out of those sources move too. Your website did not change in between. This is the most misread signal in the whole category, and it pushes owners into rewriting pages on the strength of one disappointing reply.

Treat individual answers as samples. Twenty answers across two weeks tells you something real; one answer on a Tuesday tells you almost nothing. It also means no honest tool can promise you a fixed position, because the underlying system does not hold one.

Common mistakes

Blocking every bot with one broad rule and never noticing. Putting hours in an image. Publishing a location page whose schema disagrees with the visible text. Testing by typing your own company name, which measures recall rather than retrieval. Treating a lone answer as evidence, when repeating one query on two days can surface an entirely different set of businesses.

How to verify

Put ten realistic buyer questions to a pair of engines with searching switched on, log who gets named, and repeat on a fixed schedule. Our free tools take care of the mechanical side, beginning with the crawler access checker, and our cross engine optimization guide covers the rest. Frequently asked questions

How to come up in AI searches without a large content budget?
Fix access, then accuracy, then corroboration. All three are cheap. Unblocking a crawler is a text edit, correcting listings takes an afternoon, and asking recent customers for reviews costs nothing. Publishing volume matters far less here than having a small number of pages that state real facts precisely.
How to get a company to show up in AI searches in more than one city?
Give each city its own page carrying that location's real address, phone number and hours, and write at least a few paragraphs that could not be copied to another location. Repeating one template with the city name swapped leaves engines unable to tell your locations apart.
How to appear in Google AI search results specifically?
Stay indexed and snippet eligible, since Google gates its generative features on ordinary Search eligibility, then check that nobody has switched off generative AI features in Search Console. After that, follow Google's published optimization guide rather than any third party factor list.
Does appearing in one AI engine mean I appear in the others?
No, and assuming so hides problems. Each engine has its own crawler permission, its own retrieval, and its own answer style, so a business quoted constantly by Perplexity can be absent from ChatGPT entirely. Test each engine you care about separately.
