Does llms.txt Actually Work?
The honest adoption status, what Google has said on the record, how long it takes to publish one, and whether it is worth your afternoon.
Updated September 21, 2026
No AI engine has confirmed that llms.txt changes whether it cites you, and Google has said on the record that Search does not use it. Publishing one costs a few minutes, so treat it as cheap insurance rather than a lever, and never as a substitute for the work that actually moves answers.
What it is, in two sentences
llms.txt is a proposed plain text file at a site's root that summarizes the site for language models, created by developer Jeremy Howard and first published in September 2024, with the stated goal of giving AI systems "concise, expert-level information gathered in a single, accessible location" (llmstxt.org, 2026). The full definition, including where the proposal came from, is in the llms.txt glossary entry.
The exact format
A valid llms.txt file follows a specific structure (llmstxt.org, 2026):
- An H1 heading with your business or site name. This is the only required section.
- A short blockquote summarizing what the business does.
- Optional additional paragraphs with more detail.
- Any number of H2-headed sections, each listing relevant pages as markdown links with short notes, such as your services page, your hours page, or your booking page.
For a single-location local business, this can realistically be a dozen lines: your name, a two-sentence summary, and links to your service, hours, and contact pages.

The honest adoption status
Here is the part most llms.txt guides will not tell you plainly. llmstxt.org itself reports that thousands of sites now publish one, and that some major AI labs including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google publish their own (llmstxt.org, 2026). But Google's own Search team has said directly that Google Search does not use it. At Search Central Live in mid-2025, Google's Gary Illyes said Google does not support llms.txt and has no plans to, and Google's Search Advocate John Mueller has since called the idea speculative, comparing it to the long-discredited meta keywords tag (Search Engine Journal, 2026). Google's own AI features documentation reinforces the same point in general terms: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google, 2026).
Neither OpenAI, Anthropic, nor Perplexity has published a public commitment to actively parsing and ranking based on llms.txt files either. The honest summary: it is not confirmed to change whether any current AI engine cites you, and Google has explicitly said it does not for Search.
Why it can still be worth doing
Given that honest picture, treat llms.txt as cheap insurance rather than a growth lever. It costs almost nothing to generate and publish, since it is a single small text file, and it forces you to write a crisp two-sentence summary of your own business, a useful exercise on its own. If any engine begins reading these files more seriously later, you are already there. If none ever do, you have lost a few minutes, not a strategy.
What to actually put in yours
Keep it short and specific rather than trying to cram in everything on your site. A single-location business needs, at minimum: your business name as the H1, a two-sentence blockquote summary naming your category and city, and a short list of links to your services page, hours or contact page, and any booking page, each with a one-line note explaining what it is. Resist the urge to paste marketing copy into the summary; the same rule that applies to your website applies here, a plain stated fact is more useful than a persuasive sentence.
Do not let it replace the work that actually matters
It is tempting to treat a finished llms.txt file as a completed AI visibility project, precisely because it is quick and satisfying to publish. Resist that framing. It is a small, honest addition on top of a crawlable site, accurate schema, and real reviews, not a replacement for any of them, and treating it as the main event is the single most common way this file ends up being wasted effort.

Frequently asked questions
- Will publishing llms.txt get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
- Not by itself, and no AI engine currently guarantees that it will. It is a low-cost, low-risk addition, not a substitute for a crawlable website, accurate LocalBusiness schema, and genuine reviews on the sources engines actually cite when answering local questions.
- Does Google use llms.txt for AI Overviews or AI Mode?
- No. Google's Search team has stated directly that it does not support or use llms.txt, and its own AI features documentation says no new machine-readable files are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Treat any claim that it is a Google ranking factor as false.
- Where does the llms.txt file need to live on my site?
- At your site's root, such as yoursite.com/llms.txt, so any system checking for it can find it at a predictable, well-known location without being told where to look first. It should be a plain text file, not an HTML page, and it should stay reachable without requiring a login.
- Is llms.txt the same thing as robots.txt?
- No. Robots.txt controls which crawlers may access which parts of your site. llms.txt is a content summary meant to be read once a crawler already has access. They solve different problems, and most sites that use one should still have the other.
