Where Does ChatGPT Get Its Information?

The two separate sources behind any ChatGPT answer, what OpenAI documents about each, and what is verified versus assumed about Google, Bing and Yelp.

Updated September 21, 2026

ChatGPT draws on two separate things. The model itself, frozen at a published training cutoff, and the live web, fetched the moment you ask. Which of the two answers your question decides whether anything you publish today can possibly affect the reply you get back.

The model's own memory, and the date it stops

Every model carries a cutoff, and OpenAI publishes them next to each one. GPT-6 Astra lists an "Apr 30, 2026 knowledge cutoff", while Sol, Terra and Luna in the GPT-5.6 line each list a "Feb 16, 2026 knowledge cutoff" (OpenAI, 2026).

Read that as a hard boundary. Anything published after a model's cutoff is not in its memory, and no amount of writing this quarter edits what it finished learning last quarter. When a reply comes purely from memory it reflects a snapshot of the web from months ago, including whatever your website said back then and whatever mistakes it contained.

Where ChatGPT gets its data when it searches

The second source is live retrieval, and this is the portion your effort can influence. OpenAI documents the mechanics rather than the sources. A non reasoning model "sends the user's query to the web search tool, which returns the response based on top results," while a reasoning model "actively manages the search process," issuing further queries as it reasons and judging "whether to keep searching" (OpenAI, 2026).

The crawler behind that surface is OpenAI's own. OAI-SearchBot "is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features," and OpenAI adds that sites opting out of it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links" (OpenAI, 2026). A separate agent, ChatGPT-User, fetches a specific page when a conversation calls for it.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

Partly answerable, and the honest answer has three layers.

What is confirmed by a named company: Microsoft says its grounding service "already grounds the AI platforms your customers use most" and names Copilot and ChatGPT among them (Microsoft Advertising, June 2026), and describes that service as built on "the Bing global index and ecosystem" (Bing Search Blog, June 2026). So a Bing derived index is in the stack, on Microsoft's own word.

What is reported but unconfirmed: independent testers have demonstrated ChatGPT retrieving a page that was reachable only through Google, with one experiment concluding that "ChatGPT could have only accessed this webpage via Google" (Semrush, August 2025). OpenAI has not published a confirmation of that.

What is verifiable in OpenAI's own developer documentation: nothing naming a search partner at all. The documentation covers agents, retrieval behavior and citations, and stops there. If somebody tells you with certainty which index ChatGPT queries for a given question, they are inferring.

Does ChatGPT use Yelp or review sites?

Yes for Yelp, and Yelp said so itself. Its integration "provides ChatGPT users with reliable local recommendations by surfacing Yelp's trusted reviews, ratings, photos, and business details directly within the chat experience" (Yelp, August 2026). Yelp also lists the wider set of surfaces carrying its data, naming "ChatGPT, Apple Maps, Amazon's Alexa+, Microsoft Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo!" among them (Yelp, 2026).

The practical lesson is broader than one platform. A review profile is not a side channel. It is a direct input, which means an out of date phone number or an unclaimed listing is not merely untidy, it is a wrong fact being served to customers inside an answer. Fix the record at the source rather than hoping the engine prefers your website.

Where does ChatGPT get its information from Reddit and forums?

Discussion threads turn up constantly in answers, and the reason is mechanical rather than a special deal you need to know about. Retrieval returns whatever the underlying search ranks highly for a rewritten, conversational query, and long threads asking the exact question a customer just asked tend to rank highly for that phrasing. A thread also contains many opinions in one document, which is convenient for a system assembling a balanced sounding summary.

For a local business this cuts both ways. A years old thread recommending a competitor can outlive several of your website redesigns, and you cannot edit it. What you can do is make sure the specific claim in that thread is contradicted by current, checkable facts on pages an engine will also open, and that your own name appears wherever people genuinely discuss your category. Arguing inside the thread is rarely the winning move.

How does ChatGPT choose its sources

By retrieval, then by usefulness to the sentence it is writing. OpenAI describes two distinct outputs from a search: "inline citations for URLs found in the web search results," which "show only the most relevant references," and a sources field that "returns the complete list of URLs the model consulted" (OpenAI, 2026).

That gap between consulted and cited is where most businesses lose. Being opened is not being used. A document can be fetched, scanned, and set aside because nothing on it could be quoted safely. The remedy is not more pages. It is sharper sentences, which is the subject of how to write passages that get used.

Does ChatGPT cite sources correctly?

The citations attached to a searched answer point at pages that were genuinely retrieved, because they are generated from the retrieval step rather than written by the model from memory. That is the reliable part.

The unreliable part is the join between a claim and a link. A sentence can blend something read from a page with something the model already believed, and the citation beside it only tells you which page was relevant, not which words came from it. Treat a citation as a pointer worth opening, not as a guarantee that the sentence beside it is supported. The same caution applies to anything an engine says about your business: verify the underlying page rather than the summary.

How often does ChatGPT update its knowledge?

Two different clocks. The model's memory updates only when OpenAI ships a model with a later cutoff, which is a release event you can see in the published dates above. The live search half has no cadence at all in the useful sense, because it fetches at question time. A page corrected this morning can appear in a searched answer this afternoon, and a page corrected this morning will not appear in a memory based answer for as long as that model is in service.

Where does ChatGPT get its information about me?

From what the web already says, not from a profile you maintain with OpenAI. There is no account where a business edits its own entry, so the record it reads is your site, your listings, your reviews and any coverage of you. If something in an answer is wrong, find the page that says it and correct that page. Then confirm nothing blocks retrieval using our crawler access tool, work through the six causes of absence, browse the other free tools, and see what engines report about you.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Google search to answer questions?
OpenAI does not confirm it. Independent testers have shown pages reachable only through Google appearing in ChatGPT answers, and Microsoft states that its Bing derived grounding service already serves ChatGPT. Treat the stack as blended and unpublished rather than settled, and work for conventional crawlability either way.
Where does ChatGPT get its information about my business?
From pages it can fetch: your website, your business profile, directory entries, review platforms and any press about you. There is no owner dashboard inside ChatGPT. Correcting an error means correcting the underlying page or listing, then waiting for the next retrieval to pick it up.
How often is ChatGPT updated with new information?
Its internal memory only changes when a new model ships with a later knowledge cutoff, and OpenAI publishes those dates per model. Its live search has no update schedule because it fetches pages at the moment of the question, so corrected pages can appear the same day.
Can I correct something ChatGPT says about my business?
Not directly, and not by asking the assistant. Find the source stating the wrong fact and fix it there, then make sure your own site states the correct version plainly in text. Consistency across several sources is what makes the corrected version the one repeated.
