AI Brand Monitoring Tools and How to Track Mentions
What AI brand tracking measures, the free method that costs an hour a month, and what the named tools charge, with every price checked on 21 September 2026.
Updated September 21, 2026
AI brand monitoring means asking a fixed set of questions on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI features on a schedule, then recording how often your brand is named and who gets named instead. Nothing measures it passively, because there is no position sitting somewhere waiting to be read.
What AI brand tracking actually measures
Four numbers, and knowing which one a vendor is selling you matters more than the dashboard design.
- Presence: the share of answers that name you at all. The headline number, and the only one most businesses need.
- Share of voice: your presence against named competitors on the same question set.
- Citation: whether your URL was attached to the answer, which is a separate event from being mentioned in the prose.
- Sentiment: how you were described. Useful at brand scale, noisy for a single location.
Presence and citation are countable and hard to argue with. Sentiment derived from a handful of sentences per month is the part to treat skeptically, because the sample is tiny and the wording shifts between runs. Decide up front which of the four you will act on, because a dashboard reporting all four equally will pull your attention toward the one that moves most, and the one that moves most is usually the noisiest rather than the most important.
How to track brand mentions in ChatGPT
Write ten to twenty questions in the words a customer would use, category plus place plus constraint, and never your own company name. Asking about yourself by name measures whether a model can describe you. Asking a recommendation question measures whether you get chosen, and only the second one predicts revenue.
Ask each question in a separate fresh conversation with web search enabled, because context from an earlier question contaminates the next answer. Record three fields per run: which businesses were named, in which order, and which links were shown as sources. Run the same list weekly on the same day.

How to track brand mentions in AI search across engines
Repeat that list on every engine your customers actually use, since coverage differs more than people expect. A firm quoted constantly by one engine can be missing from another on the identical question, because each retrieves from its own stack. Keep one row per question per engine per week and the pattern becomes visible within a month.
The single most common mistake here is changing the question list once results look disappointing. Freeze the list. A tracking series only means something if the input stayed identical.
The free method, in about an hour a month
- Build the question list once. Fifteen questions is plenty for one location.
- Block an hour, ask them across two engines, and log results in a spreadsheet.
- Add a column for the competitor named most often, which is usually the most actionable single field you will collect.
- Check the sources shown. If the same directory keeps getting cited, your listing on that directory is now a priority.
- Repeat monthly. Compare the presence fraction, never a single answer.
That is the whole method. Paid tools automate the asking and the logging at higher frequency; none of them knows anything you cannot observe this way.
What the AI brand monitoring tools cost
Prices below were read from each vendor's own page on 21 September 2026 and change often.
Profound runs structured prompts across answer engines and describes itself as "analyzing where and how your brand appears in responses, tracking citations, sentiment, ranking, and competitive presence" (Profound, 2026). Its public pricing page lists a free trial with 10 unique prompts run once against ChatGPT only, and an Enterprise tier at custom pricing covering up to nine answer engines with daily frequency and unlimited seats. There is no published middle tier, which tells you who it is built for. Our Profound alternatives page covers the detail.
Ahrefs Brand Radar tracks visibility "across AI answers, YouTube, and Reddit" and lists six platforms: AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Copilot and AI Mode (Ahrefs, 2026). Pricing shown today: custom prompts start at 50 dollars a month, the AI Visibility Index is 199 dollars a month with 83 prompts a day, and existing Ahrefs subscribers get a small allocation of free prompts inside their current plan. See the Brand Radar alternatives page.
BrightLocal bundles a Local AI Visibility Tracker into its platform plans, described as letting you "See how your business appears across ChatGPT and Google's AIs" (BrightLocal, 2026). Its platform tiers show price on request rather than a number today; the page does publish 2 dollars per citation for its Citation Builder and 1,299 dollars a month for managed SEO. The BrightLocal alternatives page has more.
Peec AI tracks "visibility, position, sentiment, and share of voice, tracked daily against competitors" (Peec AI, 2026) across four tiers. Its pricing page listed tier names without figures when checked today, so budget by requesting a quote rather than by assuming. See the Peec AI alternatives page, and the tool pricing table for every vendor side by side.
Google's own report, which costs nothing
Google now publishes part of this for free. The generative AI performance report exposes impression counts for AI Mode and AI Overviews, broken down four ways, by URL, by country, by device and over time (Google, 2026). Its launch announcement confirms that "As of August 31, 2026, we've rolled out these insights to all websites worldwide" (Google, 2026).
Two limits keep it from being a complete answer. It reports impressions rather than mentions, so it tells you a link from your site appeared without telling you whether your brand was named in the prose. And it aggregates: when "two results from the same site appeared in a generative AI search results feature, they count as a single impression" (Google, 2026). Use it as the Google half of your measurement and sample the other engines by hand.
Is it possible to track brand mentions in AI search reliably?
Reliably as a trend, yes. Reliably as a single number, no, and any vendor implying otherwise is overselling. One query repeated on two days can return a different roster with no site having changed, so a presence figure built from a single run per question is mostly noise. Build it from many runs, report it as a fraction, and judge movement over months.
This is also why a tool that shows you a confident score with no visible sampling behind it deserves a question about method. Ask how many runs produce the number.
How to get brand mentions in generative AI
Measuring a thing never earns it. Once you know your presence fraction, the work that raises it is access, extractable facts and outside corroboration, in that order. That sequence is laid out in the optimization work that moves it and diagnosed cause by cause in the absence checklist. Begin by confirming engines can reach you with our robots file checker, look through the other free tools, then get a sampled baseline free.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I track brand mentions in ChatGPT without paying for a tool?
- Ask a fixed list of fifteen customer style questions in separate fresh conversations with web search on, and log which businesses and which source links appear. An hour a month produces a presence fraction you can trend. Paid tools automate frequency, not insight you cannot get yourself.
- What is the cheapest real AI brand tracking option?
- Free, if you count your own hour and Google's generative AI performance report, which costs nothing and covers AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions. Among paid tools checked today, Ahrefs Brand Radar publishes the lowest entry figure at 50 dollars a month for custom prompts.
- Is it possible to track brand mentions in AI search accurately?
- As a trend across many runs, yes. As a fixed score from a single run, no, because answers vary between sessions for identical questions. Insist on knowing how many samples sit behind any number a tool reports, and judge changes over months rather than days.
- How often should I run AI brand tracking?
- Monthly is enough for a single location, since engines and competitor content both change gradually. Weekly is worth it while you are actively fixing things, because it shortens the feedback loop. Daily tracking mostly measures the natural variance in the answers themselves.
